“When we fall asleep, where do we go?”
– Billie Eilish
I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW where we go when we die. Hence, I’ll be writing a weekly column devoted to the meaning of death. The first few columns will look at near-death experiences: what they have in common and how the meaning of death has changed for people who were almost dead. I’m starting with near-death experiences because, right now, they seem like the most hopeful, most reassuring avenue of enlightenment.
Subsequent columns will include conversations with priests, preachers, rabbis, and monks. I’ll visit with morticians, taxidermists, gravediggers and doctors. I will explore topics like rituals, reincarnation, heaven and hell.
At this point in time I’m thinking that death is the end; this is what we got and, when we die, we don’t have it anymore. But if death is not the end, well, what is? And, if death has any meaning, what is that meaning? Honestly, my friends, I have no witches to hunt, no axes to grind, no biases, no agenda. I don’t know where I’m going with this Substack column about the meaning of death, but I suspect that it will shed light on the meaning of life as well. And so it is with equal parts fear, humility and bravado that I ask you to please join me on this journey.

Two things about Substack:
(1) Because I’m just starting out, this column is free. Down the pike there might be a charge for special features or for access to the archives because Substack encourages paid subscriptions. But, for now, it’s free.
(2) Substack is stacked with controversy because the site permits the publication of antisemitic, racist, conspiratorial hogwash by asses and idiots. I mumble: “Always some bad apples, sticks and stones, free speech, yadda yadda.” It don’t worry me. Don’t let it worry you.
Bottom Line: Subscribe now.
